books r useful only to a certain point. So, I would suggest not to buy a very expensive book.

re: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
i just got this, planning to learn php and mysql. first part of the book "to use this book you should already have a basic understanding of php" so do not get this book if you want to learn php. looks like i am gonna have to buy another one.

you guys are silly..
I haven't yet purchased any php books due to budget issue, but i would probably grab chris lea's (and friends), which i had flipped through once or twice and really looked damned good. (linked above by unfit)
also i've heard the PHP Developers Cookbook (no, not o'reilly) good once you get past the beginning stages of php http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
most of all keep http://www.php.net/ minimized at all times. The user comments make the manual by far the best resource I've ever used.

I started with the beginners book that Chris co-authored. As a matter of fact, that's how I met Chris...
I think the phone call went something like this...
"Hi Chris, you don't know me but we've built a small site called Newstoday and we're having a few PHP issues, would you mind taking a look."
Nonetheless, the book was a great starter and I highly recommend it.
