Image Placement

I'm having quite some trouble laying out my images using a CSS layout (as opposed to Tables).
Right now, the images are horizontally lined up correctly, but vertically, there are spaces between each line of images, which I don't want.
How do I get rid of the spacing? I tried using img classes w/ negative margins in CSS, and it worked, but I don't know how well that will work with other browsers outside of my own.

I haven't uploaded the images, I've just used the x's as a mockup.

Okay, well I figured out a way to fix this problem.
I used image heights greater than 20px and IE gets rid of the spaces in between each image placed vertically.
Has anyone else noticed this? Does this "feature" exist in any other web browser?
