Are brainstorming sessions supposed to be a forum to toss out any idea - where no idea is good or bad - but could possibly lead to something brilliant?... where your fuel is your fellow employee and likewise you're his/her fuel to new ideas - amongst personal research?
... or are they a self-assumed "I'm going into my corner and I'm going to come back to the table with my ideas and ram them in your face - drop my pants and doody on your ideas - because my stuff is shit-hot" sessions?
... i'm really close to leaving the design world - just because of the egotism. I could manage a taco-bell or something --
I need a pep-talk here!

No! Don't leave, abizzyman. We need you.
There will always be egotistical dolts but remember that most often, they are insecure and try to cover it with ego, at your expense.
Who is leading these brainstorming sessions? Someone needs to lead the sessions to keep the playing field fair. Can you talk to someone?

you can do it!
free tacos all day long!

mitsu - free tacos for you... always.
I think I'm going to see about getting a managerial position at Chipotle.
mmmmmm
... the insecure one is me. I let them get to me... and don't want to deal with it.
... i'm weak. *sniff... damn, I'm needing alot of hugs lately.

Not digging the new gig Kevin?
Brainstorming sessions should be like the first way you described, and not the second, but yes unfortunately they are fucked up sometimes.
:P

the new gig's just tough to get used too...
... thought it was going to be a design studio where everyone comes together... puts their heads and hearts into generating ideas that are awarding winning on a studio level ---
--- instead there there's internal ego's and dreams of personal fame as apposed to helping us all get clients and enjoy our jobs...
... and I'm the worse of the bunch in my own way - cuz I'm letting it get to me.

believe it or not - there's a chance some 17 year old manager at taco bell is going to have an ego as well - because he's no longer a fry guy
its not a design thing - you'll be hard pressed in any industry to find a job working with a group of people where someone doesn't ego trip. some people use their superior position to act superior - it makes them feel good. quite often because they are extremly insecure in other aspects of their lives

No matter what industry you work in, you always have to deal with shit like this on one level or another. It's how you cope with it that keeps you sane.

AD and Jnr are right on. every industry I've put time into has has an incredible amount of arrogance and a serious lack of true talent, which usually warrants such loud mouth and brashness in order to cover up inadequecies.
