or my real advice... work in another line of work till you find your design job... you will be surprised how doing construction... or being a waiter can help you in the long run... having 1 form of experience isnt that great ... get as much experience in differnt fields as you can ... and this is a good time to do that. There are lots of cool jobs out there besides design...

Quit the pitiful "industry" called Web Design.
And all your employment problems will be solved.
In fact, there are tons of great jobs in the Military.

In many ways I agree with qburt, take another job for the time being. Being a designer in my opinion is not about a single medium, but rather is about problem solving. We don't neseccarily have all the tools, but we know how to bring them together and create the experience needed. So any additional outside information, into a large number of proffessions and services can be useful. There are bound to be other things that can make you happy in the short run. Search them out. I've always wanted to work in a book store (I like to read), but never have.
In terms of finding work, maybe you need a different approcah. there is lots of competition in our field, and the demand lately has cut back a bit. I always feel like you need to seperate yourself from the pack, truly. Don't just send out the resume, send out something that will get someone's attention, market yourself in ways you've never seen. Anything is worth a shot, right? I mean, what do you have to lose?

dont be too pridefull to take a job making less... but most of all being unemployed in this feild is a way out... so use it.... and get a great job and work your way up to making 400 a day or whatever...

if web design is proving unreliable for income, try moving over to print.
usually plenty of work there..
i did print graphics for years before i made the switch to this...and if can do that, surely you can do the opposite.

Something I did before design was custom picture framing. Putting together frames, cutting mats, etc. I also did this a couple years ago when I found myself out of a design job for two months. Seems you can easily find a job doing this in almost any city, pay is around $12 an hour. Not very much, but it's a job, and it's nice to build things with your two hands insted of a mouse :)

Offer to work for half what their given salary would be for a specific position. $30K for a junior designer job? You'll work for $15K. That's not the greatest, but it's nearly double the 2003 US Poverty level, which is $ 8,980 yearly for a single person.

I wouldn't offer to work for less, that just hurts us all. Then the Clients expect to get 48 hour work days for half the price, I'm sorry but I'm NOT doing that. So go work as a waiter till someone will hire you for what you know your worth.
