never ever buy one at a store. you can go down to your local jewelry district with a picture of one you like that youve seen on a site or from a phamphlet you can get from a store.. and they can make you a custom one with bigger more quality stones and you can even put your own creative spin on it. most rings like that appriase for much more than what you bought it for. if you buy from a store you could get a buncha flawed, yellow, or yucky diamons (or whatever stone it is you want to get her) and you'll end up getting something that will appraise for much less. dont waste your money!
thats what my fiance and i are doing. my ring is getting made by a jeweler in downtown los angeles. you go in there and its not a fansy shop.. theres no rings to try on.. he just has loads of diamons and he helps you pick em out... and he'll take care of the rest after you tell him what you want. do some research.. take your mom along. dont get screwed ;)

that one site had titanium men's wedding bands (a link from above)
never thought about that. I hate gold with a passion, Platinum or white gold is much better.

If you aren't interested necessarily in the traditional, rather expensive route, you could try a student. I attended school at the Rhode Island School of Design, which has a jewlery and light metals department. Beautiful work from grads and undergrads. I know quite a number of people who commisioned students to do work for them.
if you go to Alumni and careers, you can post a job link for students and alumni.

Or, do like a friend plans to do and get your girl a Mini Moog instead of a ring.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/s…I don't blame him, I spent over an hour in Guitar Center on this thing, sounding like a spaceship meets PimpBot meets the end of the world!
