we got a few .psds the other day from a client's previous art department and many of the product .psds had a masking technique i havent seen before...they had a product on a layer linked to a mask, but instead of the mask concealing something, it was adjusting the brightness/contrast of the product (ie, it was a levels mask)...tried to find info on how to do this on google, but no luck...do you know what i mean, how do you do it...?

yeah, the adjustment layer. it's the little pie shape icon (half black, half white) in the layers pallette. very handy, try it.

adjustment layrs are a terrific tool in photoshop. You can add a hundred of them if you like without effecting the "real" image/layer. They are the safest way to tweak an image. Learn them and use them often.

If you Option Click between 2 layers the top layer become linked to the bottom only effect that layer. We use this all the time It's one of those Secret Photoshop trick we all love.

Supposedly when Photoshop 8 ships later this year they're going to add filter layers that work essentially the same way as adjustment layers.
Or try setting up an adjustment layer and then putting a mask on that layer. Nice for really fine control over effects.
