of course. kissing ass is the eassiest and the only way to be someone in this industry. just take a look on your scene. in mine (bcn) there are a lot of kissing-asses-profesionals. but i wont say names!

depends on which industry youre talking about. dealing with clients directly + kissing ass can get you a job. i work in the entetainment industry and quite frankly all they want is to hear how important they are, how cool they are, how theyre just so fucking awesome, and then what you can do for them.
if youre talking about working for a design firm... it depends on teh place. there is no ass kissing required where i work my fulltime job. there arent huge egos there either. however there are plenty of design firms that require you feed the egos of the art directors sr artists and owner of the company, otherwise they wont like you. sucks though cos sometimes you really want to tell them you dont like what theyre doing and you cant diss their work.
