I once had this talk with an Autodesk's (makers of AutoCad and owners of discreet's 3dStudioMAX)person here in Portugal, and off the record, he confess that the licenses were that high to cover piracy costs. Wich (unfortunately) represents 70-90% of all software used here.

well, that can only partially be true. considering the software was hardly ever that inexpensive (relatively).
If 3ds max were $75 - $100, I'd have little reason to hesitate on purchasing it. Same goes for most standards in professional software.
