i wonder how u guys can read and recognize between MS Ripped Arial and Helvetica?
I want to know too... I can't see much different... I got both of the font... just wonder why MS didn't install Helvetica at first place. Anyway, it's hard to get Helvetica... have to buy or ask from friends around. unless he/she's a mac user.. :D
gosh... the G5 again... yum.

MS didn't use helvetica for two reasons:
1) licensing. it was cheaper for them to create a new font.
2) built for speed. Arial, while ugly at large point sizes, is excelent at screen resolution and its splines are few to make for quick rendering. when you build your entire OS around a font, you obviously want it to be lightweight and fast. Helvetica isn't, it's not made for the screen.
that said, Microsoft's type lab is full of brilliant people. don't hate.

I believe MS would pay Adobe for the license to install it on their machines, so they ripped it.
There is a very slight difference in some of the thicknesses of the curves, (see the bottom left of an a for example), and the ends of the c's and s's come all the way round in Helvetica, and stop about 15degrees short in Arial.
I think.

The easiest way to pick out Arial is by looking at the Cap 'R'. It has a lazy leg.
