great design can be learned.
why would you think otherwise.
why would you bother with school?
why would you bother getting a critique?
why would you bother studying other designs?
of course great design can be learned.

got to have some flare too.
- Seph0
lens flare? Naturally !
Well I meant learnt in the formulaic sense.
learning a maths equation = objective activity
learning to design = subjective activity
you know what Im saying !!!

im hard as hard as chinese arythmatic

No....
Good design = Objective thinking

education is good for learning where you're coming from, and a few rules.

objective thinking = good design?
an odd equation.i hate to mince words with ya'll, but objective thinking is only part of the equation.
and objective thinking is also something that can be learned in relation to design.
i was a shitty shitty shitty designer all thru school. i learned thru critique and the study of other works. (now i am only a mildly fecal designer)
like all art, design can be subjective. some folks will argue for the sake of argueing that great design is not subjective, but my bum says different. =)
anyway, so... yea, you can learn to be a better designer can't you? you can learn to be MORE objective can't you. this doesnt necessarily mean that it can be TAUGHT (although it can to an extent), but it CAN be learned thru study or even from personal experience. my thoughts anyway, and just because i say something doesnt make it true. bleheheh.
and now that i have had a semi intellectual outburst, allow me to back up my statements by saying "don't wank in the shower unless it is YOUR shower."
now, i am gonna go scratch my chin and pretend to listen as my boss tells us all that our work is top notch, but we could do better.

i am fortunate to work in an office where we are pushed and pushed and have many design reviews.
they are the hardest thing to sit through because they hack your work (and love it sometimes too!)
these meetings push my limits, in turn i think will make me a better designer in years to come.

design isn't hard. design is the marriage of a creative and logical process. Client education is hard. And design becomes impossible when a client steps in and shreds the process.
- Gorbie0
I think that the equation, although rigid, is true.
Design is a marriage of art & creativity with logic & fundamentals. Design must have a clear objective. It will fail to achieve it's goal if it's objective is missed. Have you ever seen a chair, and thought, "how the fuck am I supposed to sit in that??".
Granted there are maybe a few exceptions. But those subjective exceptions are, most likely, intended to be so.
For example, "That's a chair? How the fuck am I supposed to sit in that..... ooohh I get it! That's genious!"
You probably lost half the people, but you may have hit your target in doing so.
* Pass that crack pipe, I'm on a roll!

Design is hard. It requires thinking about communication in a broad sense but also requires a concise solution.
- Gorbie0
Everyone here should understand that selling an idea is much harder than dreaming it.

(jun 23 03)why do i find it so damned amusing to do that? *sigh_* shoot me.

Everyone here should understand that murdering clients is much harder than dreaming it.

design is the most difficult thing ive ever done because its soooo subjective.....
- Gorbie0
Your perception of design may be what makes it sooo difficult.
- Seph0
Yes but design having an objective doesnt mean it is objective.
The function of design is objective, the process by which it is realised is completely subjective.
The answer to a complicated maths theory lies in the majority of cases, by following a rigid set of processes.
Design has, within it infinate numbers of combinations and juxtapositions, many rigid processes and rules that can be learnt, but the combination of these is a personal manifestation of cultural influence personal stuff.
