I wanna start making some sound effects other than little cracks, pops and farts, where should I start?

FruityLoops and SoundForge are a couple of good places to dick around.

depends on what you want to do. You can take previous work and change that around, slice and dice it with an editor like Sound Forge from Sonic Foundry. Let's say you like some 1950 recording from a vinyl record. You can plug in your record player into your computer and record from that and then do the editing. There are about a million effects you could place on your content. You could use soft synths like Reason from Propellerheads or even Fruity Loops, which is fine for sequencing sounds and patches. You could use hard synths as well, any of them from Korg, Roland etc. are good or even Grooveboxes and Drum Machines or samplers from the likes of Roland, AKAI or even Yamaha. Again it all depends on what you want to do. I just makes snaps and cracks and shit for people for Flash use for free and for shits and giggles. Other than that you are making something that is longer or even loopable. ;)

if you want to make drawn out sound effects, then I would say you will want to use a hard synth as their presets are easier to record but you can do the same with some soft synths via MIDI. ;)

actually you can take those beats and ReCycle them and resequence them many different ways.
