In a few weeks, my girlfriend is moving to Georgia, specifically, about 30mins out of Atlanta.
She's going out there to teach for a year, but i'm stuck here in Nottingham, UK.
Are there any desginers out there? Is there a 'design scene'? If she decided to stay, and I decided to move out with her, am I likely to get work? (I'm a webdesigner, Multimedia designer, Print designer when it suits, and a general graphics monkey - who does a bit of personal photography now and then)
Just feeling things out really. Anyone got any general comments about the state?
Thanks!

Atlanta here. Well kinda. Just moved a little farther out from the city.
As far as your "design scene" question, it is probably not as strong as in some other cities. A weird time everywhere for design in general.
If I am not mistaken, some folks over at 404collective.com make a regular effort to meet out for some drinks on the weekends.
And if you're curious, the best design studios in town are, IMHO:
Iconologic:

There is alot of talent in this city. It seems it's just more the kind that you won't see flashing from a marquee on the FOX theater.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

I live in Atlanta. There are some good people here. Some I've met and some I haven't. Just have to feel it out for yourself. Most people seem to be freelancing, but there are a few jobs to be had.
It's probably a little nicer if you live in the city, but a lot of folks here commute.
A little while back people were getting together more. It seems to have slowed over the winter.

I just got through typing out a very long and detailed response but by the time I submitted it, I was logged out and lost the whole thing.

UK? awesome, lots of people from the UK in ATL.
well, i grew up and went to school in ATL and i disagree with some of the firms listed so far. Good work but bad places to be. Graphic Havoc is from ATL, but all left like I did and almost all of my friends.
Best bet is to go to AIGA events and find out which firms are the good ones (the best ones are not even on that firm list), i will go ahead and warn you about Melia...
As far as living there, some good people but for the most part its all about getting stuck in traffic with nowhere to go, strip clubs, racism, and baseball! I just visited my brother and we found a dead crackwhore in a ditch across the street from his house.

hey werker, about the dead crack whore, did ya give her a good southern style po-kin?

werker:
I believe the Georgia Tourism Board wants to hire you to promote the city and state. excellent job.
