the only internship I did was unpaid at a small design shop. I loved that place (r.i.p.) . These guys were sick designers but they were also shrewd businessmen. Deals going on with the photographers, kickbacks, I saw one of them make $200,000 in one day. I knew that when I finally got my skills I would be part of something sick.
I was a slave for one year before they finally started to pay me. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. I learned so much during that time and met really great people and most of all how the business works.
BTW. Even at their level, it was a thankless job. That's why they all went on to different and better ventures after about 7 years in the business. Now these guys are even more paid than ever.

I made $8 my first...$12 my second..freelance usually for $15-20...and now I am interning for $10 in Boston.
it really varies ... some of my classmates make well over $20 at their interns..howerver..I attend a school where it is both mandatory and we have established strong relationships with a myriad of design firms across the country. we call it co-op ..or cooperative education.
I took a sweet job with low pay...but what the heck..my friends sold out ( to corporate) and make almost triple what I make.
It's all about the experience...
Make the best of it!

i am currently a student...the only internships available around here (center city philly) work out to be less than minimum wage when you divide the pay by the hours...and those are even hard to find...more common than less than minimum wage is the stipend method which = $20 a day in most situations...in my experience (and i have looked at tooooonnnnnnnss of firms) the well paid internship is like the loch ness monster...end rant by pathetic starving guy :)
