Why can't I use the target attribute in the A HREF Tag in XHTML?
Wassup wit dat?
What do I use instead, Can you not open windows in new windows without javascript?

if you wish to open content in a new window without the use of javascript, you must revert your DTD back to html 4.01 or xhtml transitional. sorry.

aparently it is a possiblity through a work around. but then i'm the kind of guy who figures his site is valid HTML even though the bar right above the excerpts from my flash tags screams i am not.

a work-around using javascript, which is not what was desired.

that link gives a very good explination and a decent workaround.
maybe you should rethink opening new windows for external links? do you really need to do that?
is your site so boring that you are afraid people won't come back?

target works fine if using xhtml transitional... which you should be using anyway as it's more acceptable across browsers/devices.

"Some may take issue with Yank’s opinion, but to me it makes sense. And the benefits of serving the user while maintaining document validity - however it is accomplished - is more important than obsessing over specifications of which I have zero control."

Bah, It's Either HTML or XHTML F the whole transitional thing. This is not a work around but better yet the propper way to do it. It is very easy to implement but could be something that needs to be dealt with next time they revise all the rules.

187LockDown, you should grab this book...
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
it explains in detail which type to use and why. transitional is by far the best and safest... especially for websites.

I love how passionate people get over standards, both sides.
Me personally, i like the idea, and am currently enjoying the fruits of the standards warrior's labors but I won't adopt them for most freelance projects as they cost me time/money.
Plus there is no way i could convince any of my clients they should pay extra to have a 100% XHTML Strict site. My next personal site, most probably, next client site, prolly not.
I am now going to stand back and watch the tomatoes fly.

i stick with transitional, because the int0rw3b is not ready for strict.

Yes I have only used strict for my own projects. I looked at the book, might see if they have it at B&N tomorrow, I ususally just sit there for a few hours read hte books and leave. Your right though, the int0rw3b is not ready!
