So the client of course thinks he wants his presentation created in Power Point so that he can pull slides and edit the sponsors name on the fly. I have convinced him Flash is best and thought (since I have never used PP) that I might be able to build out some dynamic flash presentation allowing him to do those things within a text file. Should I reconsider Power Point? Is it hard to learn? Is it limiting? What are your experiences with this product? Good? Bad? Never again? Love it? PLEASE! I need to decide within the next couple of hours.

The Boss like Powerpoint because it is as dry and uncomplicated a Business Tool as you can get. Non-Creatives think it is well magic. It is not. Maybe have a look at Apple's Keynote software? Has anyone tried it?

hey man..
flash is obviously sweeter in some ways..
but power point shows are not only a cinch to do (easy easy easy) they serve a purpose..
as in,
don't make a mona lisa, when all you need is a stick figure..anyhow..power point is easy to learn...not that terribly limiting since, hell its for a sales presentation most likely...
my experiences have all bee n pretty good with power point, in that, i don't expect it to be all that great..
just to do what it does, fast and simple..my first job doing a PP presentation took me all of about 15 minutes to learn the program...
its pretty damn simple..
lets you spend more time in photoshop doing funky images and stuff..
anyhow...
inthe end, use the tool you're most comfortable with..i'd choose PP only because, hey...if there are last minute text changes, they're a fuckload easier to change for non designers..
as in, once it's finished...email or send the guy the finished presentation..any changes after that, like text, headllines blah blah..
THEY can do..so...to sum up..
PP..a shit program?YES
hated by desingers one and all???
YES
good for its purposes, and easy as hell to use???
yep...
cheers

this isn't going to be your biggest master piece but a job that'll pay the rent and hopefully get you more jobs that might be more exciting. PP is a good tool, very limiting but you won't be able to charge as much as you charge for developing an application in flash, or director. use your design skills to make it look good and don't go over board. it's a job, nothing more. you won't be able to predict what your client might want to change in the last minute. give 'em something they're familiar with.

totally agree with yott.

What if I built it in Flash and each "slide", including the navigation was created with dynamic text files that they can edit in word allowing them to remove slides, edit the navigation and even edit the slide itself? Why would this be harder?

Microsoft spends Billions on advertising gorgeous Italian models in suits with their Blueberrys looking really "CEO" so obviously your boss thinks he should use a Microsoft product. Afterall, he just learnt how to input formulas into Excel. Ahh bless him.

stick with yott on this one - trust me! i've done several flash presentations and its just not worth the heartache!! you know - here's a little secret - you can embed flash movies in PPT using the action control panel and VB script - so go for a neat slide design and spruce it up with some animated loops or generic titles - also PPT XP has fade-through transitions which rival keynote and Quicktime fades on PPT for Mac...
BTW - i fuqing hate PPT - but sometimes you've gotta sleep wit the devil...

Macromedia has a new product called Breeze... might be helpful... although it's cost and licensing fees are rediculous.
