is it true that +/- 20% of the websurfers is using a 800x600px screen?
- ldww0
+ i am sure
are you asking because you want to design for 8*6 or you want to go higher?
general audience i would think it is safe for 8*6, if you site is more for design nerds *cough* then i am sure higher is fine.
- schjetne0
I would have thought it was way more than 20%.
- stewart0
mmmh. i don't want to make a design fitting into 800x600, it is such a small area viewing it on a 1280x960 screen...
- unknown0
AFAIK 800x600 is the majority of users, kinda 80%...
1024+ is used more by programmers, designers, videomakers...
- autonoma0
Do most computers come with their monitors set to 800x600? It's been so long since I had an actually 'new' computer.
- 4cY0
AFAIK
?????
what does that mean????no, i think a lot, if not most use 1024 setup, a lot of new PC's come with 15-17 inch monitors, usually good for 1024.
- autonoma0
That's what I thought. So I wonder if 800x600 is slowly shrinking in popularity.
- ok_static0
it really depends on your target viewers.

AFAIK = As Far As I Know.
BTW, BTW = By The Way.

seen some stats and 1024 is slowly becoming the standard. I still think that 8 x 6 is like 30 - 40 % of market and is not to be ignored. But it is shrinking in favor of 1024.
- pmrebel0
I agree with the theory (pratice) that you should think about your target audience. We know that the Internet is for everybody and anyone could end up at your site but, who's looking for it? Who will probably find it? Anyway, you can get some good design and content in a safe size (like entry pages for 8*6 and the rest of the content ready for superior resolutions).

check out the stats on: http://www.reinvigorate.net/syst…
long live 800x600!
- pmrebel0
Well, I do like the "long live 800x600" slogan (my site was made for it) but I'm almost certain that most of the reinvigorate.net users are design and graphic related people dont you think?
- unknown0
there should be stats of a broader universe...
- CX0
Is reinvigorates stats the stats of the users of their site or the entire internet?
- mc_escher0
Broader (more broad? whatever) stats for you:
- mc_escher0
Compare that to May 2002:
http://www.thecounter.com/stats/…
and you get an idea of the trend toward 1024x768...
- ilmarine0
yep, did the comparison - the yearly drop of 800x600 and the gain of 1024x768 is 7% in both cases. so, we can start designing for 1024x768 in may 2010 or so :(
well, maybe not - checked out january 2000 and saw that 640x480 was 11%. as far as i can remember nobody had designed for that piece of shit for some years already...
- shellie0
just so you know.... on echoecho which stakes stats from big websites with normal non designer web surfers 47% + are surfing on 800x600. honestly lets be reasonable. nearly 50% is too large to ignore. especially if you plan on making a portfolio site that your clients or future clients would be looking at. they will most likely be looking at your portfolio at a normal resolution. horizontal scrollbars are so ugly.
most web designers dont think about that when they make their portfolio sites. it just looks sloppy and unprofessional.

yeah you have to take into account for dodobirds
