there is clean crossbrowser xhtml doctype. and xhtml itself is the biggest crap ever, if you need X, then do some xml and apply xsl, you can declare it as xml document then. that would exclude netscape 4 users, but those ppl cannot be helped.

you'll have to set different doctypes for different browsers to get "valid" xhtml, whereby valid does not mean really valid as some html tag's attributes are not handled correctly (opera for example completely ignores the script tags within your xhtml document).
i'm just looking for the link where this has been discussed. i'll post it when found.
