looking at 8500 fonts once or twice or ten times isn't going to get you anywhere. What are you going to remember?
What you need to do is start educating yourself about typography. Find some literature and begin to read about the history of type and about contemporary type.
"Anatomy of a Typeface" a good place to start.
You need to familiarize yourself with typography based on assests that each face has, and qualificationss that make it good for certain applications, understand the differences between faces...
Start to identify typefaces that you see in usage, from memory, and build up a vocabulary of faces that you can draw upon.
Ane, in the case of needing a specific face, like a blackletter or something, turn to reference books.

uhh ok - yeah i think heard of that book before ;) LOL
i guess i didnt explain it right - im looking for a tool so i can PREVIEW all the fonts i have - lets say im working on a
new layout - and i want to use a script face- i know i have at least 300 script faces in here - but ill probably end up with
carlotta just because thats one of the names i can remeber... no idea what the otehr script faces are called and im not about
to memorize them all ;).. so im saying - does anyone have something they use to preview fonts quickly and easily? we
started to make a typebook but it was using suitcase - and taking forever... so i looked up and found Font reserve &
Font agent - which might do that - has anyone used it?

Font reserve has a preview method (as well as a print, preview method), as does ATM, but they don't organize previews by any parameter. If you want to look at all your script faces, for example, you need to get them all in one place, then preview them, one at a time. Which means you need to know the script faces and be able to identify them as script faces.
I think its better to just familiarize yourself with lots of "good" faces. There are so many bad faces out there that aren't even worth the time it takes to look at them.

i figured as much...
i just didnt want to have to break them into categories and take them out of the alphabetical order it's in...i guess i should weed thru them first : / anyone need a non paying internship? :P

extensis suitcase will give you a list of previews of all the fonts selected, but after selecting about 200 it is going to be slow...
i use font agent, it lets you click a next button, or have it automatically play your fonts with a small interval of time in between them all...
other than that, you might just need to search versiontracker for font utilities and see what you can find...
- taragee0
yeah we were using suitcase...
i think for font reserve u can look attehm without loading them - which would be DOPE
