i find the AIGA to be wholely overrated.
just opinion of a former member.
it became too stuffy and more of a status symbol than anything else.

I'm actually a new member working to try to change the AIGA --- at least the print-focused, out-of-touch rep for the chapter in Los Angeles. We've just launched a new site at http://www.aigalosangeles.org, which has a good community, comment-oriented back end and some good content (check the current article on Neal Ashy - designer of the Thievery Corp stuff). AIGA is a big org and turning them is like trying to turn an ocean liner, but we're trying --- and could use any help people want to give.
PS: I believe that the 'designing' piece is written by Keith Yamashita --- parter at Stone-Yamashita, one of the most successful high end design consultancies out there.

the Richmond chapter is ok, the former president of it is a really cool guy. i wanted to join but...kind of became disillusioned. Clemet came by for a chat which was cool.

the writing is very poor hence very funny because it tried to sound oh so convincing and serious
