Hey choke,
Pay in Japan is ok, but we're in a massive recession still so things are not quite like they used to be.
Average New Media Designer Salary is around 40-50k (USD)
Can be higher depending on skillsets.
I've been here for 5 years, London before that. Tokyo is great (if you ignore the earthquakes).
Theres bad things and good things in Japan.
Also, from my experience, foreigners who come here either love it or hate it.
theres only one way to find out...

one of the best things that came from there for me is walkman, thats an amazing invention, changed the whole world on a social, political, lifestyle perspective..n did u figure out yet y they dont have keylocks on their doors seperating rooms in their houses (well the traditional ones), when I was told y..i was enlightened..n inspired..

Thanks choke,.
To answer your last question, I did not have a job when I got here.
Did not seem to be a problem getting one though, everyone I met was so helpful at recruitment companies and stuff.
Best thing here at the moment is the bandwidth.
I have dedicated 100mbps optical fiber into my house. Downloaded a 1.2gb movie from my friends ftp site(tokyo also) and it only took 8 minutes.
Love it...
CU in Tokyo one day

Mmmm. Miss Japan.
I'd love to work in Japan. Design or not. The management hierarchy's not keen on foreigners, though, it seems.
- chokethefat0
man, that last bit u wrote convinced me totally..about the optical wire net connection, that's wicked..love technology..
so what u r hinting here is just fly over, then look for jobs n stuff, n peeps r friendly?! warm welcoming? even betta..well if u got some time, check out my NT profile, hit my site..n tell me (here on NT, or hit me an email at :) )if they would dig my work or not, cos i'm not much of a corporate, strict design type of guy (tho i can still do corporate/strict looking type work)...n that usually limits job opportunities for me sadly..
even in TO, i get worries cos i 've noticed it's mostly strict cold corporate site designs that sell..
- chokethefat0
well dequinix, chip is the man for such info..so..
yeah design in Japan, or France too is so advanced and always one step ahead ..that's y i wanna figure this out for myself..the y n how it's done and approached?
