I'm moving to a student house, my desk will be tiny so I'm considering buying a 17'' tft screen.
I know I'll see colors different than anyone else ... how serious is this for web designing?

I already addressed this problem once and didn't get any comprehensive answer. The colors are definitely different. I do all the stuff (including print - yes, dumb am I) on the Sony 17". I think I will never switch to TFT. The colors just suck so much... I can hardly see grays on LCDs....

hm ... this is what my desk will look like .. http://drk.oejab.at/ausstattung/…
so I think tft is the only option ... how bad is the color problem? opinions pelase!

hey, I don't think that is a particularly small table. I mean, get rid fo TV and you can place a 17"-19" CRT.

I design on a laptop, its not a major problem, but now and again I reference my work on a desktop, just to be sure

yeah I think that's the way to go kingkezza ... I'll buy a tft and check my work on a mates' normal screen.
thanks for your opinions.

I also design on a laptop, and I do shit loads of print. it's BS that TFT is going to screw you.
Get a decent calibration program and LEARN it. do some tests with a printer you like, get his inks and printer set up.....
its harder to keep a CRT to fly steady than with colours than a LCD, what with temperature changing, amount of time being on, no digital input, there is lots of factors involved in keeping a CRT true.

if you absolutely can't avoid it, just buy shelf for the crt. you can put the keyboard under it and viola

if you are designing for web, who cares. just work on a decent monitor. the user will see what they see. it's not like print. you cant control the end result

TFT really do suck with color accuracy - don't do it. Every job you do clients will complain that it looks different on their monitor.
You can get fairly compact CRTs now... they're still not as slim at TFTs but look into it.
