Address Book in OSX

    when I've had my computer redone, i've exported the address to save on my back-up drive (and a jaz to be safe), but when i import it back in later, it doesn't read. So i went looking through an OSX book and found the folder in one of the Libraries that's supposed to also hold the file. However, only my internet bookmarks were easily replaced and my email addresses were in a text file with all this garbage around it. can someone tell me why the Mail gods are angry with me? please?
