Can anyone explain me why some urls start with www2 or www3?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's something to do with load balancer. Some websites have several servers and if one it too busy they will send you to another. Sometimes you don't see it and sometimes IT guys name their servers www, www2, www3, www4, www5, www6, www7, www8, www9, www10, www11, www12, www13, www14, www15, www16, www17, www18, www19, www20, www21, www22, www23, www24, www25 etc.

I think we get the point... but what about www26, you missed that one.

www26 is being rebuilt and www27 is in next year's budget.

www69 is my personal favourite

what Bertrand said.
they are known as subdomains

let's say the www2, www3, www4 are names given for uninventive coders.
u can put any name u want instead of the www.
right now, my brother gave me the http://nicholas.frota.net from his site, http://www.frota.net
i don't know exactly how to do that, but it's just a matter of repositioning.

either (1) contact your host
some hosts charge for subdomains, some don't
or (2) do it yourself if you have that kind of access to your server - method depends on what platform you're on

I think it makes sense now, I am familiar with subdomains, and yes they are up to the hosting. Some have the feature and some don't.

most hosting companies using CPanel offer unlimited subdomains... i use http://www.RSMHost.com ... very easy to set up in CPanel
