Illustrator Question

  I'm trying to create a new pattern swatch by dragging a shape to the swatches pallet. Some pattern colors work ok, others turn black when i try to use them. (The pattern is there, but color is lost.) This happens more when the patern is on a smaller scale.

  Is my illustrator broke or am I doing something wrong?
