Anyone know of any cool sites that manipulate text strings visually to make cool animations/transitions?

It needs to be flat on synamic text... i.e manipulation through characters.... not space... but thanks for those links Tim, I will have a look

Basically.. I'm looking for anything where I can supply a starting string and an end string, and it'll find an interesting way of getting from one to the other... particularly interested in any that use an algorithm that is used for something else...

There are some pretty cool distress type effects using string manipulation. Check out the book as it explains these pretty well.
