design is a functional art form!
-H.Curtis.
so yes I believe design IS an art form with tangible elements and restraints being applied and used.

If a urinal on a pedestal is art, or a goldfish in a blender, then yeah, design is art.
not a real survey anyway...
- Bluejam0
No it's not.

i would say design can be art but art cannot be design.
- ganon0
no
art is free of function, the result of a persons desire to create...just because....
design is "artful"....design serves a purpose, fulfilling requirements to enable function...often done best when its artistic and original, but that doesnt make it art....

Here we go again - design vs. art thread ;)

i believe design carries a certain artform in itself... like hillman curtis said design is an art form with functionality..design is def not art but a certain type/form of art..
design is the bridge bet art n science one could say.
in fact, the first designers were engineers , thus coming from a science backgrd..but nowadays, implementing art principles in design helps to sell design..

It really isn't much of a debate.
"art" isn't like "car" or "bucket" .. there's no way you can pin it down to a consistent definition. The whole 20th century has been all about bending and stretching that word around all kinds of stuff.
It's now so big and flexible you can wrap it around anything you like.

You are all wrong.

if a tree fell in the forest, would anyone hear? who IS on first? what exactly happened to the chicken who crossed the road? ...and, ultimately, why? why, I ask?

Lets ask the Answer Prancer...

art can be a good source of inspirations and aspirations for designers and design approach/practice.
art is NOT design and design is NOT art to a certain extent.
but design is surely an artform, not art in its core definition however..
well that issue is very subjective..hahha..but it surely is interesting to read others' perception and appreciation of it.

I used to pose the question to my students on the first day of class.
Most students said that they thought designers got paid and artists didn't but I assured them they were wrong about that. Even Michelangelo got some bling for the Sistine Chapel.
The best answer was from another instructor sitting in on my typography class. He said "Artist's create problems and designers solve problems."
I always found that to be the best answer for me on the stubject. I don't know if it really address this thread but I thought I would share it.

Fake statement such as "design IS art" might push for higher quality of work though...
- kpl0
everything I do is a work of art.
- chokethefat0
nicely said kpl ..he's got a good point here i reckon
- ribit0
why do we keep getting this question?
design isnt art.
design is design.
duh.
but...
how do design and art differ?
how are they the same?
- o0o0
"Artist's create problems and designers solve problems." That's interesting.
I went to school for fine art. There was always this stupid division between the art and design/illustration depts.
The design/illustration dept was stuck up and anal. The art dept. was all lazy, no-talent weirdos.
There were a lot of people that fit those stereotypes... I guess that's how stereotypes happen.
Yeah, function is an important distinction.
- ribit0
there can be a lot of art in design of course... but I think the question 'Is design art?' is practically meaningless or in fact missing the point... it is more complex than that.
- ok_static0
design is not art, and it isn't anything at all.
however you can make art by the means of design.
- kpl0
ahh. zen time.
