is there any kind of plugin for windows media player that allows you to rotate and/or flip the video in realtime?

You can do it in Director... but then that's not what you want.

You might want to check out mpeg-4 stuff. The standard has all kinds of features in addition to the AVC codecs. There are several vendors. You might want to look at Envivio offerings for example. I know they have a plugin for MS and QT players.
