What do you say to a client asking you to supply unpaid designs to help them make their stupid minds up?
- mitsu0
cash, check or charge?

i say "here, sign this contract and pay me half up front and half on completion. and also notice the clause that says if you use my designs, your ass is FRIED byatch."
thats what i say.
then i show them my c#*k and run like mad.

You say that the design is where you earn your money. Then you say that you are the czar of the moon, and that you will strike them down with furious anger if they ever ask you for freebies again. Mention specifically the rending of their frail forms into ashes for extra effect.

I think it depends on the client.
If you can trust that they just want to see some rough and quick stuff to see if you're on the right track then I think it's fine.
I know a lot of people here say "NEVER! IT'S SELLING THE DESIGN COMMUNITY SHORT!", but I think that most people would agree that as long as their not expecting too much work then they'd do it for the right client.
If you're talking about completed design work - no chengs man.

have a clause in the contract that says if they dont use you as their designer and steal any of your designs that the fleas from 1000 camels will infest their genitalia.

uh, "No"?
But it depends on the client, doesn't it? And on your own principles.
Any client that's serious about their project and respects you for the work you can do should be willing to pay you fairly for your time.
If they've seen what you can do (i.e. your portfolio) and they like your work, methinks that asking you to work for free kinda takes the biscuit. Plus it opens you up for all kinds of possible headaches...

a good way to rationalize it is that architects do spec work because jobs are worth millions, or tens of millions of dollars for the average project. In graphics this isn't the case, so it isn't worth it for professional designers to work like that.

Spec work as a pitch is a bad bad bad bad idea.
