Okay... I've decided to move to NYC to go back to school. Can you guys give me an idea of the design industry up there as far as work goes? Is it easier just to freelance? Also, anything you can tell me about FIT, the fashion school? Thx!

I went to F.I.T. for photography, the program itself was mediorce, but the population of the school is 70% female. That made it very bearable.

mm sounds perfect!

hmm...well, I'm a girl... so, whatever. Overall, do you think the school's pretty good and reputable? I want to go for fashion design.

I went to FIT for illustration. This was in the early 90's. I agree with timajick. The sights are lovely. My professors were the same professors teaching at SVA and Parsons...but the tuition was $20,000 a year less. I couldn't afford SVA/Parsons but it makes very little difference now. And I have this great job eating jello out of the can.

if you a girl, then you'll be adding to the beautes swollen was talking about ;)

ryn, I've heard that SVA's design school was better (and cheaper) than FIT. Good luck.

hahaha... thanks guys! I'm going to have to work fulltime for a while when i get up there just to live... hope the job market isn't as bad as it is down here in the south!

A few friends of ours who went for fashion design are now very successfull. They have a really good placement and mentoring program I believe, and just beign in the city puts you in contact with many important people. Its also a LOT cheaper than Parsons. Good Luck!

SVA is a great school...but very expensive. But for something like illustration, the only true resoursce you'll need to pay for is the instructors. All other materials relevant to illustration don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things. Like pencils and paper. And if the instructors are the same in both schools, why bother with the higher priced one...unless the 'pristege' of having those letters S V and A on your resume.
