I'm wanting to go to thailand in the beginning of june - whats the SARS situation there, any good news sources?
But mainly - can anyone in the UK recommend places for cheap flights / insurance.

mate...seriously...forget this SARS shit - it's a bunch of hype and scaremongering.
If you aren't old and you are in good health you have a .03% change of catching it...and less chance dying from it!
Because it is flu-like in design - the summer will kill it out anyway..
Thailand is a great place - but steer clear of the usual tourist hotspots if you want to see the unspoilt beauty it has to offer...and definately miss koh samui..horrible!!
Try STA mate - they always have the cheapest flights....

cheers jevad, yeah thats what I thought, re. sars but I was hoping that there may be some 'sars discount' on flights ;)
I'm going for 3 weeks and will be working out some kind of route so any recommendations would be cool.. I certainly wasn't looking to go raving hahah!

I'm going with a couple of friends so I'm sure there'll some err 'debates' on where to go.

if you go there don´t! mss bangkok - for a beach holiday the best islands are koh samui (north east area - don´t reside on the east coast unless you´re a hardcore tourist) - koh tao and all the small ones that are located around this area! don´t panic about SARS too much - if you feel secrure GO! and chances for bad accidents are low! if you feel insecure stay at home and watch tv.

i spent three weeks out there over christmas and new year to have a change of culture and for some relaxation.
got some cheap flights and it wasn't very well organised really, kind of made it up as we went along.
i would say though if you are looking to avoid foreign tourists getting pissed then koh san road (bangkok), haadrin (koh pagnan) are to be missed.
for me the highlights were a few days spent in a commune on a beach which we randomly found and a new years eve party on koh tau (great island), where they had put hundreds of candles in the sea and made giant sculptures of dragons in the sand.
if you are looking for more adventure though i would be tempted to say go north to chang mai.
thailand is such a beautiful place and lovely people. i definitely want to go back and see the north next time.

thanks guys, personally I would prefer to check out the north but I think we're gonna be going down to the islands, hopefully avoiding hardcore tourist areas and then coming back to spend a few days in Bangkok.

hello there
i' was in Thailand in April for 2 weeks. Of course SARS is real, don't push ur luck too far. this said , as long as you 're careful in crowded places , planes, any place with a air conditioning you'll be fine. The worse would be China or Hong Kong, but you'll get plenty of info from many different sites on the up to date situation in Thailand. For the trip, i usually fly any european or Asian Airlines or Us of course, prices are really cheap anyway, there, i love the north, for the islands, from one you'll get top the next so don't worry about finding the prefect spot.. now again Koh Samui, Phuket, Pattayua and more are not the places you want to see. Go in the Kao San ROad district to meet up with the travellers (even if you plan to travel alone) just to get precious fresh infos and on your favourites islands , a fake Student card and some of the best bus fares in the country for the coast.. ;)
good luck.. i don't agree with the message above .. : BE CAREFUL..

thailand is the world capital of Pirated Softwares....
of course thats not always a bad thing

going with Gulf Air, it worked out at £420 inc tax - there was a slightly cheaper one at £390 but it was all booked up, turns out that today was the last booking day for the dates I wanted so that was pretty lucky - I typically leave everything to the last minute.
cant wait to go now!

excellent price!!

if you want a quite time go to Reiley beacj of Krabi. Only about 30 rooms there and the sunsets are amazing. The bar on the beach will give you what you need to enjoy the sunsets that bit better if you give them the wink and a few baht.
Your a lucky fucker by the way as thailand is crawling with scandinavian, american, canadian, australian and asian chicks. I love thailand.
Fucky fucky 5 dollar? I dont think so, sex is free, dont pay for it.
Also you must go and see the transvestite shows, a good laugh, and the strip shows and pingpong balls also.
If you want to get mad out of it head to Ko Samui for a few nights and sample the Thai whiskey (amphetamine based) mixed with redbull and coke in a bucket.
Oh the memorises. Not a package holiday but you will have the time of your life!

and stay away from the Diet pills if your not too fond of bad comedowns, trust me, you will never be the same a gain
