Your Dream Cell Phone

My dream project is finally here. I’m going to design the user interface for a cell phone and work hand-in-hand with the industrial design process and hardware development. It’s the perfect blend of design and technology. I’ve used countless cell phones in my lifetime and have yet to find one that looks stunning and has hassle-free functionality. My goal is to make a phone that my grandma can pick and instantly use and my engineering friends drool over. I’m hoping you guys can send me your wish list of features you would like to have on a cell phone and also critique the ones you have used in the past. Let me know what you find useful and what just takes up space. I’m really interesting in ways you think a phone could be made easier to use. Things like the features you use everyday, and things you have said to yourself, “why the heck can’t my phone do that”.
Thanks for the help!

my phone is retarded... Samsung CH-n370... i hate it
the vibe is so weak that you cant feel it... it takes like several buttons and menus to do anything... and if you press the wrong button, or wait like a few seconds it cancels whatever difficult process you were trying to execute. Also, oh man, this is the worse... all you have to do to remove the keypad lock is to hold down a stupid button... so it basically unlocks in my pocket, and dials a bunch of numbers while im walking around... DIE DIE DIE, I WISH IT WOULD JUST DIE

thanks preston for starting off my post. this is exactly what i'm looking for!
also...do you like flip phone? and do you even use the web browser?

ipod, pda, phone, mp3 player, radio, gameboy - all in one.
would be nice!

'web browsing' on a phone is stupid.
i like phones that feel responsive. i once had a phone that took seconds to move down a simple list of names.
speakerphone speakerphone speakerphone. i love that feature on a cell and have never had it. my next phone will have it.
something that syncs without hassle for people with wireless networks and/or bluetooth .. think rendezvous for the mac.
hope that helps.

3 things I can't stand with my current (SonyEricsson) phone:
1. T9 spell check only works when typing messages, it should work all through the phone, menus, adress book and such. All the names you put in the phone book should be automatically added to the spell check's dictionary.
2. When you finish typing a message, you have to press send + back + phone book + first letter + yes + yes again. I've always liked nokia's system better.
3. When you're at the bottom of a list, it won't "scroll around", you have to scroll yourself all the way up again.
These are bad things.
Good luck with the project!

these are great! thanks so much for the help. And lefton, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm currently using a Sanyo J95 phone (PHS) at it has a speaker phone. It kicks ass! The rest of the phone sucks. I mean the feature list is amazing but the interface is impossible.
thanks again for the ideas and keep them coming!

1 word... KEYBOARD. like the new nokia http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,44…
put on camera/video camera on this...... and make it thinner... with a larger screen and mp3/radio support
and your set.

a FAST interface ... I've replaced my nokia phone with a Siemens c55 - having to wait for menu items to load annoys the hell out of me

Sensible priority given to functions - it takes two button clicks to take a picture on my panasonic gd88 but sometihng like five or six before you can start typing an SMS.
Also I notice that a lot of phones use a horribly complex menu system when you're say, adding names to a recipient list. You have to go add, then find the name, then ok it, then do it again. The T68 had a neat tickbox affair. Maybe you could just scream down the phonebook list ticking names when you want to send a group text message or something.
Anyway, good luck, that's a sweet project you got there.

One that would tell people to go away for me.

flip phones - yes.
Check out the phones Sharp make for japan - nice.
Not too small, buttons get too fidgety.
Dont get all osx with the icons / interface, I'd much rather see something old school with cool icons rather than 'ooh we've got millions of colours lets use them all!!
