Dell seams quiet good, inspiron 85..
or even better latitude 800D with the new centrino CPU.
Don't buy mac, it's only a PC with design for a higher price. (appart for the OS.
LOL (here we go again)

Whatever PC you buy make sure to get an extended service plan. All laptops are damage and defect prone. The newer Centrino chipped machines appear to worth considering as well. If there's thing I don't like about my Powerbook is the 3.5 hour battery life.

Buy the new 17" from Apple. A recent article in the NY Times or Wallstreet journal or something compared laptops for best bang for the buck and the fact is Apple's come with more standard features and better, more reliable hardware. So, for the price and features, the mac is the best buy. As for Treehorn's battery life, I don't know why it is so short, I get 4 hours intensive use no problem.

Besides, most PC laptops have a lot shorter battery life (my friends toshiba can't even make it 2 hours just using word). And the PC's with longer batter life weigh 2 or three pounds more.

yes, i have a pc laptop and the battery life is shit, less than an hour in photoshop and about 1.2 hours of word

Battery life is all to do with how the battery has been treated over its life, when you charged it and for how long etc.
Apperently Centrino processors are better for battery life.
I was SET on getting a PC laptop after talking myself out of an apple.. but then a mate showed me his 15" powerbook.. v.sexy.
I like the look of the sony laptops, can't find anything powerful enough, waiting for next generation.. or g5's :)

I was going t buy it last week but it didnt feel very sturdy.
And i have treated the notebook battery very well, as i do with all the ion batteries i have for minidisc, cameras, phone the whole lot, pc batteries just arent up to scratch. If you know of one that goes above 2 hours let me know

the toshiba tecra (centrino) range offer a 5 and a half hour battery life, 3 year warranty, windows xp pro, <3kg weight, 32mb graphics and wireless capability (as with all centrinos). i'd give cpu specs, but centrinos don't figure on the same scale as the rest - if i remember right a 1.3GHz centrino is equiv to a 2.0GHz P4. this pc/mac stuff is a load of rubbish - a lot of it depends on processor & there are a ton of different processors within both the mac & pc ranges.

I have an older Vaio that I actually won at work. It's a PII-350. I don't use it a whole lot because of it's lack of speed. But even worse the battery life is like down to 15 minutes.. and that's even after it's just been fully charged.
I had it out the other day, and on minute my Battery Indicator said 90% life left (so I'm thinking an hour or so), and then 2 minutes later my screen goes black from a dead battery.
Wondering if freezing the battery might help 'reset' it. The thing is so old I'm not sure it's worth spending the $$ on a battery.
