I got a client yesterday by eating at a restaurant!
I did it by checking out to see if they have a web site before I go and if they don't I ask for the general managers card...
If they do have a site? I can see what promo material they've got (sometimes) and suggest new ideas.
That's one way but really and most often by word o' mouth!!

Friends and other clients telling them about my my work.

I find mine under rocks, they only come out to advise on 3d spinning logos and 24pt text usually. Sometimes they tell me their cat made a facial expression which means it has a few suggestions about the layout, font etc..
You gotta love 'em.

2001 - 2002.. bars and clubs... had lots of them. Of course it's also an expensive means of finding clients when business is slow...
Now, friends in the business, word of mouth, a bit of cold calling, and an occasional contact from bars i used to frequent - but i guess that fits under word of mouth.

slutting around my cards and portfolio cds. everyone i meet that doesnt have one gets one.

you have to be outgoinging to make it as a freelancer. either that or get an agent who can be outgoing for you. but then if you have an agent thats good.. you have to be good enough for them to want to slut around for you. if your skills cant sell that you most likely wont get a good agent. but what am i talking about? i had too much to drink tonite g'nite.

you had too much to drink... and I can't ever seem to have enough.
