If you're making a small site on a particular subject, and uses photos found on google, would that be illegal?
Let's say I'm making a site about cars with a few pics of different models, but I have a note saying "these images belong to their respective.." blah blah.
This is a non-commercial spare time project for arts sake, and the images "borrowed" are there "in a positive context", which means they're there because it's pretty.. ya dig?
So, would I expect a law suit on my ass if I did something like this?

probably no lawsuit, because it would be tough for the people you "borrowed" them from to know, but it is in fact illegal.
If you wrote the people and got their written permission then you'd be cool.
