physical is much better than digital in terms of getting peoples attention.
Send them your physical portfolio/a poster/a postacard/ something you've built/ just something.
It works wonders.

i sent a cdrom portfolio to a company looking for freelancers. im in full time employment and just sent it as it was my first one and needed some feedback. the guy was well impressed to have something sent to him and said that that approach was a good way of doing it...
i agree, physical is good.

i printed out my resume and super thick stock, and put it along with a business card inside of a smoked plastic folder. then i put 4 post-it notes on a piece of paper, put that in the printer and printed out the following in a scriptish hand written looking font and placed it onto the resume... "note to self, call 'insert name here' tomorrow to schedule an appointment for an interview" in the upper left hand corner i printed "place on monitor" and in the lower right printed my contact info.
i got 6 calls the next day from the 10 places i sent them to.
