HELP!! Can't fileshare OS X

Please help, I've been trying to network 2 macs running OSX. I've tried assigning IP's to both computers but nothing happens when I go to the GO menu.
I turned on file sharing, Appletalk, and no firwalls running on both.
Nothing shows up under the go menu, not even the local users.
I'm connected directly from each eithernet port by an ethernet cable and there is no internet connection on either computer.

don't you need a hub in there somewhere?
what kind of cable is it? cat-05, etc...

I wish I could help you. I'm in the tech support field. I don't know hardly anything about macs. What I do know is that if I'm working with art or anything, I'm supposed to use a mac... I don't, but that's what I'm told to do... lol. PC's are really great at networking. I'm sorry that's all the advise I can give you on that... lol. :) laters!

You need to either use
a. Normal cat5 cable to a hub from each machine, or
b. a crossover (aka twisted pair) cable going directly between the machines
