what does "something like this" mean? does your boss mean colors, type, structure? Cause, if we strip all those funky thingies, like bg, visuals and blah blah - both variants will be coming from the same direction... Your variant is definitely cleaner and smarter, though..

I like the nav system of the first one better. But I'm all for the sort of design of the second one. A combination of both would be damn slick.
