would anyone reccomend "flash to the core" by JD?..is that a good book?...

the tutorials included in the program are quiet good, then try by yourself.
About Actionscript, I bought the book from Moock and it's really good.

Learning Flash is fun. Get a few good books(I used the Friends of Ed series) and spend time studying them and experimenting.
Don't worry about borrowing or copying code from other source as part of your learning. Experiment on things that you like on other sites, and try to build them.
Along with books, there are a bunch of good sites out there, such as flashkit or devshed. you can look around on the net for more. Also, join a mailing list or two for any questions or ideas you might have.
I dunno, maybe this is all stuff that you know, but if not, I hope it helps.

i second the built in tutorials on getting to know the program. it's very good suprisingly.
then yes colin moock is the best actionscript book you will buy.

think of weir menu/movie structures
get some tutorial that comes near what you want to achieve - rebuild it, alternate, play with it.
a good way to learn struc tures and action script!

PS: don´t start hand coding. click your script, one day you will sit down and code it by hand! :)

nuff said. walk before u run.

good advice, shape tweening will just side track you and keep you from learning interesting things about flash... shape tweening has so much potential but it just sucks really bad and it takes hours to do anything and it doesn't work properly and just when you think you've worked it all out it will take a dirty great rusty steak knife and cut you up and make you cry

man...i teach flash at a university...if you want to learn flash fast DO NOT take a class. most of the time in my class consists of discussion of solid animation/interface theory. and how to use photoshop/illustrator for use win flash...if you are a art director, then it will all be stuff you already know. with little stuff you really need to learn.
i would say, goo buy a book...lynda weinman has some really good literature. she lacks a little on technical stuff, but is great at wording stuff in an understandable way. or just go to www.lynda.com and get a user accound and do her tutorials.

Friends of Ed have some decent books (some better than others) and they will walk you from beginning onto more advance actionscripting.
I took one online class that was mostly useless and all we did was go through a book.
Trial and error is the best, with constant posting on Flashkit or one of the others (I haven't been keeping up with the others). They are really great and you'll get quick answers to all your questions. Really, if I did web design all the time, I would have no problem paying them (but, hey, they don't ask!).
Books are your best friend for learning.
