i know that this question is going to make me look like a complete and total flash idiot...but im willing to risk it.
ok, ive got a button inside of a movie clip. i need this button to move the playback head on the main timeline...sounds easy huh....damn easy you say?
well then why in the hell cant i make it work?any help would be much appreciated. any stupid remarks about triviality of my quandry would be redundant because ive already mentioned it to myself.
.thanks.

surely somebody knows this...
come on...what am i missing?
- smoothy0
this might help..might not..
Make a frame lable on your main timeline and name it "move1"
then insert this actiion in the button.
<>on (press) {
_root.gotoAndPlay ("about")
}>>CODE>>
hope that helps

what smoothy just said, but make sure that the name of your frame label and the reference to that label in your code are the same
i.e. label is labelOne
code attached to yr. button ison(press) {
_root.gotoAndPlay ("labelOne");
}and there you go

ok, well that makes me feel both better and worse at the same time. that looks exactley what i had, but when i copy and paste it, it works...i guess i had a space in there somewhere or something...
thanks a lot guys.

i didnt realize that i did that...I copyed the code from a module im working on..after i wrote the first few lines..
Sorry about that..

Along these same lines - lets say you're inside a movie clip - instance name - clip1- that resides on layer one, frame1 on the main timeline. On the last frame inside mc_clip1 you want an action that tells another clip - instance name - clip2 - located on layer2, frame2 on the main timeline to play. Shouldn't it be:
_root.clip2.gotoAndPlay();?
I've tried this as well as:
_root.clip2.play();
and:
_parent.clip2.play();and none of them work.
is it because clip2 isn't on the first frame of the main timeline?

if your playhead resides on frame 1 on _root than the stuff in frame 2 (clip2) doesn't exist yet....If you want to control one clip with another, they need to exist at the same time, i.e. the same frame...

ahhhhhh. Gotcha. Thanks, j_red!

better to use _parent instead of _root.
