Well boys and girls, you need to pay attention to what he is actually saying. For the most part it is true. Do you as web designers, make the web site pretty or actually worry about bringing in money for your client. A business website is advertising and ROI is important. If you have never thought about that then maybe you are a "basement bob".
Also, thinking of your clients ROI will usually increase your own ROI (the extra time you spent on his site). After he covers his cost of your expertise you can usually count on some updates and added features i.e. newsletters, content management, and whatever else you think of to sell his services to customers.
Just thoughts

"They talk a good game, and can get your head spinning with terms like Java, HTML, and MS SQL databases, but the truth is, they don't have the foggiest idea about Internet Marketing or how to drive profits to a business using the web. This is why most websites fail."
no, some, not most, websites fail because the suits are the final word of how the site is designed and developed.

I had a client that was happy to pay $500 for a little display ad in the Yellow Pages thinking that it would bring him tons of business.
I told him that if I did him a site an then he just se a small ad showing his web address, he will get more business and save money. In other words, great sites are great, but great sites that are promoted, even cheaply, are even greater.
