I'm quoting for a job where minors can fill in an online application form. Obviously this is sensitive data (no bank details but kids addresses and stuff) and would need some sort of encryption. Would SSL be necessary or just some form of encryption by PHP or similar?

Any advice would be mucho appreciated!

if your doing _anything_ sensitive with forms online you should always go with an SSL certificate. PHP encryption works great for the backend (where the info is stored) and when used with SSL it can become a killer combo keeping most of the information 99% hack free from prying eyes.

But as the saying goes, "If someone wants to decrypt it bad enough, they eventually will".

btw, pick up an SSL cert from http://www.verisign.com They issue them firsthand so its better to get it straight from the horses mouth rather than dealing with some rinky dink middle man out of tacoma, washington!
