i've been told that there is a bit of software that can turn your computer keyboard into a synth, to save having to buy one. i thought it might be good to use while i'm saving up for a proper keyboard. unfortunately, the guy who told me couldn't tell me what it was called or where i could get it from. can anyone help me out? i'm a bit new to all this audio stuff, although i'm having a real blast with reason!
cheers.

you know what, there is something like that and you can download it at http://www.downloads.com just go there and search for virtual keyboard software. But your right, you need to get a general MIDI keybaord like the one's you will see at Edirol (a Roland company) at http://www.edirol.com their MIDI keyboards are by far the smoothest out. They will control soft synths and other applications such as Reason and Orion Pro. ;)

If you are using reason you should get something like an Oxygen 8 midi keyboard...they only cost about $200...but you also need a midi interface like a midisport 2x2. That cost about 60-70 bucks. I have a Roland xp-30 and if I had got reason before I bought this keyboard I would have just gone witha simple midi keyborad instead of this $1100 space waster.

Another thing...if you want to use other sounds you can get a simple midi keyboard and get the sounds from other keyboards by getting the rack mount versions of them. For example all the top studio keyboards come in rack mounts versions....the Yamaha Motif and the Korg Triton are the best to get right now.

Actually the Oxygen8 from midiman has a built in midi interface so you don't have to buy one... And it is so easy to use... they also have a larger Oxygen 16 now as well...
