ColdFusion Q for u peeps!?

Hey ,
im on google trying to figure out what coldfusion exactly his and how easy it is to use . trying to find some tutorial...
anyways , i found lots and lots of bla bla bla , but doesnt really tell me what its good for/ used for ? and how easy it is to use it?
does it run on linux servers or only window ?
i have a linux server...Anyways , if anyone could give me example of what you can do , and how easy it is ? basicaly , ive never done anything that works with database , but id really like to get to know how to do these kinds of stuff , if only to get some variable in a DB , or simply text . Id like to use it with flash too if possible.

yeah before CFML was edited with an editor called Allaire Studio and I guess was bought out or whatever by Macromedia, because it seems to be their technology now? http://www.macromedia.com

Cold Fusion was a middleware language to incorporate a dynamic data source with a presentation layer such as HTML. Basically, a way of maknig database driven sites, same as to how ASP and PHP are used.
ITs mark-up language was called CFML (you guess the acronymn). And the whole kit and coboodle was developed by Jeremy Allaire (and his brother I think). The software company they formed, called oddly enough, Allaire, was bought by marcomedia about whiles back and part of the technology forms an integral part of macromedia MX offering. I think Jeremy Allaire still works for Macromedia in some capacity as I have seen him on a few presentations...but that may well have changed.

ok cool , soo , coldfusion ( CFML ) is an alternative to php / asp ?
ive always heard that php is currently the best ...
dah , soo i guess coldfusion is no good then.
