i think you should look for "norton utilities", an useful software for these kind of problems...
or try apple+option while starting the computer, that creates a new deskfile and may solv some of your actual problems.
if the computer freezes when switching to desktop while working with a program try to minimate the files and folders on the desk and kill the preferences of the program that freezes the computer if you do so...
in any case i recommend you "norton utilities", really useful.

Yep Norton Speeddisk. Burn it on a CD with a stripped system folder and reboot from it by holding the C after reboot.

Norton Utilities is good if you don't mind a bunch of invasive tools that you didn't really need to begin with (and that occasionally crash). If you're just 'defragging' and you want something stable, Disk Warrior is probably best. But that's just been my experience.
