Whilst I'm really loving OSX and all it stands for... Has anyone found any optimisations to make it run faster?
Because I would of thought turning off drop shadows and alpha windows would help if possible?

yeah, theres something called 'shadow killer' to well y'know and a few others like skins to get rid of the stripes and the like - do a search at version tracker.

I've found the only real way of speeding it up is adding lotsa ram.

try path finder. its a snappier version of os x's finder and it can be found at http/www.cocoatech.com/
i've used it and its pretty cool.

are you running Jaguar because it screams much faster than 10.1
