our company just got a deal for a 20 minute flash presentation...it will involve audio, and walks you through the features of a computer program...it will be available on the web via an Admin login...i have never done something this large, is flash ok to do this with?..what about director?..will loading external swfs be important?..so the sections can load individually?..i have never loaded external swfs and dont know why/how they are used?..any advice?...

You actually asking for advice on how to complete a project...which we know nothing about and thereforce cannot advise on any build strategies.
But as you've never done any flash work complex enough to load in external swf's, I gather its going to be an uphill struggle.

thanks for the help and vote of confidence MR_T, you are quite an asset to PV-AN....
i tried to explanin the project with relevent info without being longwinded, if you would like more specific info, tell me what you need to know...i dont know what other info i can give relevant to getting feedback to my original questions...:
a) for a 20 min demo presentation which will be on the web, is flash the best application to use? or is director better for presentations/demos?
b)is this where external swfs come into play? to load sections of a very large movie as the user requests to move forward?
c)and if this is all too vague to generate any general advice, i apologize....
thanks all....

Still vague... We've done software demos before and they can either be very simple or complex depending on the level of interactivity you want ot show both for the presentation and the software you're demoing itself... and if you ain't done a lot of flash stuff before... I wish you luck!

How did your company win the deal if the staff doesn't have the relevant know-how?
Here's an example of Flash presentation:

I've done a bunch of long flash presentations, exactly like what you want to do, and here is what advice I can give you.
1. You MUST use loadMovie for two important reasons. One: to split up what is going to be a huge (file size) movie into digestable chunks. Two: if you try to load 20 minutes of uncompressed audio into flash it will crash. And it should be uncompressed, you compress it in flash.
2. Split up the audio into small chunks. If the chunks are too long with a lot of animation the sync can get off. Your best bet is to add actions to the end of each chunk of audio that matches up the audio and motion so that you are esentially re-checking the sync every so often.
3. Set the audio to "stream" inside flash so that you can scrub through the audio and time the animation to it.
4. At least as of Director 8.5 (haven't tried MX) if you load long Flash movies with audio into Director they WILL NOT stay in sync. You must use actionscript to resync. More trouble than it's worth unless you must use director.
Hope this helps.

As it's a web based presetation file size is all important factor in this depending on just how complex you want to make it? If you are looking for some like a CD rom then director, but I think you will be Ok with flash.
Yes external swf's enable section to load in separatly not giving the viewer time to read a novel! nothing worse than waiting ten minutes!
Using external swf's also lets gives you nice neat section you can call upon andupdate with ease.
If you have a look at :

we have been doing consulting work for the company, so we already had our foot in the door...the demo will include 55 screenshots which will have corresponding audio...interaction will be minimal, just allowing you to go back or forward....the animation elements are just a moving cursor, bringing in text, highlighting certain areas....
thanks for the demo link!...

you can do anything and everything, never say you can't you can especially with Flash
- ganon0
thanks everyone, for the advice and links...you have been very helpful...!

jazX, so i should use flash for my next client who needs their redesigned ecommerce site to get to the top of search results...?
maybe not for every solution, eh!
