I just got new hosting with a unix server with PHP/mySQL. My first question is do I have to use telnet to make the database in mySQL?

not if you have a CPanel or something... it will create the d'base for you

OK that account unix with CFM resources doesnt have a main control panel. All I have is an IP address and a password.

You can probably install phpmyadmin on your server and control the dbs that way. If not, then yup, it's shell for you.
And, don't ever use telnet. Use SSH. Telent hasn't been secure or even very good for over a decade now.

If you are on a shared server you probably won't be able to install phpmyadmin. You'll need to contact your host to create your mySQL database for you. They'll email you your login, password etc.

If you're on Windows, check out sqlyog (http://www.webyog.com/sqlyog/). It's a compact and very fast graphical tool to manage your MySQL database anywhere in the world. And its also FREE.

You should be able to set up phpmyadmin without much problem, but the previous post was right, that you may have to ask your host to add a db for you.
