how do you go about printing right up to the edge of a page.? For example, if in illustrator or indesign I draw a blue box so that it overlaps the page area but then print it to either a printer of a .pdf, I still have white margins. How can I prevent this. Help appreciated.

Hm... I guess you haven't done much print before.
What you have to do, is print on larger paper, and cut off the white margins... Very few printers can print all the way to the edge of the paper.

schjetne, no I haven't done any print work before I can understand that it might not be able be done on a home printer but I would have thought I could have printe it to pdf without margins. don't proper print companies have printers that don't print margins. I find it hard to imagine print companies wasting paper in this way?

it's true. Most printers won't do a full bleed. If you're doing 8.5 x 11 then just setup Illustrator at 11 x 17 and create your own margins using guides (or however you want). Then you can cut off the excess once its printed.

Print companies wasting paper?
Damn... You should visit a printer one day, and see how much paper they go through. Your jaw would hit the floor.
Just on my last press-check, they went through a stack that wne tfrom the ground to my knees. And that was small.
