A NYC cop stopped me as I was taking pictures tonight to inform me that a license is required to use a tripod ANYWHERE on the streets of NYC.
Way to stick it to the photo-happy tourist! First city I've been stopped in...does anyone know where I can find out more info on this subject?

that bs. I was stoped once when filming on the stairs of the post office (the one on 36 st) and the cop told me that i can't film here as it was government property, when i asked whether i can film on the sidewalk he said he can't forbide me that as it's public property.
Belive it or not, but cops don't know shit about laws (that comes from my friend whose bro is a cop). Whenever asked whether you have a "permit for that" just answer whether "do i need one?" (most of the time they won't have a clue).
Another thing is filming in "public" places that actually are not public -- such as Grand Central Station. There you need a permit for "any kind of equipment that touches the groud" -- such a tripod. Most likely you can go aroud it by placing tripod on your shose...
