sound trouble

Lately my sound has been acting funny. If I'm playing an mp3 and I start a big program like photoshop, at first it sounds like an old scratched vinyl record. Then the music gets cut up more and more until it finally stops. I have to restart the computer to hear sound again.
It's a >400 Mhz, 348 MB RAM computer so I shouldn't have this problem, and I've never had it before.
Could this be a physical problem on the soundcard? Or is it some junk program running in the background? Virus?
Let me know if you have any experience.
Thank you.

try downloading the latest drivers for your soundcard.

did you install anything to trigger this? when was the last time it functioned properly, and what was the last thing you did before it turned this way..?

Ask the devil to leave (politely.)

I'm trying to figure out what triggered it. I let winXP automatically install a webcam and it installed the wrong drivers, after reboot it was gone. I also recently installed a lot of new fonts...

i dont think its likely that fonts can cause this.. i would blame it on the XP

Yeah. The way I was thinking was that the problem accurs when I'm starting a program“. Now that I have more fonts the programs need more resources to start? I don't know. Thanks.
